Asheville experienced historic flooding as Hurricane Helene pummeled Western North Carolina in September 2024, with flash flooding engulfing the valleys with the force of three months’ worth of precipitation less than three days. Rivers swelled close to 30 feet high, erasing roads, bridges, mountainsides and entire towns within hours. Electricity, water and internet were gone, and even cell service was limited. The one beacon to survive the storm? 570 WWNC and the iHeartMedia Asheville staff.
